Your Child's First Wrestling Tournament: What You Actually Need to Buy
Walking into a sporting-goods store after your child joins wrestling can make it seem like you need hundreds of dollars of specialized equipment.
You don't.
For a first youth wrestling tournament, the list is surprisingly short. Ask the coach what the club supplies and read the event rules before spending money.
Need
Wrestling shoes
Wrestling shoes matter because their close fit and mat-specific sole provide traction without bulky edges. Aim for secure heels and comfortable toes. An expensive elite shoe will not make a beginner better.
Competition uniform
Your club may issue or organize a singlet or approved two-piece uniform. Confirm colors and rules before buying.
Water bottle
Use a simple, leak-resistant bottle and label it. One you already own is fine.
Likely Need: Check the Rules
Headgear
Requirements vary. Read our complete headgear guide and practice in it before the event.
Mouthguard
Rules and braces can change what is required. Read our wrestling mouthguard guide; ask a dental professional about braces or individual dental needs.
Nice to Have Later
A knee pad, dedicated wrestling bag, compression gear, spare singlet, or upgraded shoes may become useful after your wrestler develops preferences. None should be an automatic first-week purchase.
